Model Drug Abuse Centers

To prevent drug addiction, Model Drug Abuse Centres are rendering services in 10 hospitals of Punjab. There are six Centres in Lahore at Mayo Hospital, Services Hospital, Mental Hospital, General Hospital, Jinnah Hospital, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, one each at Multan in Nishtar Hospital, Bahawalpur in BV Hospital, Faisalabad in DHQ Hospital and Rawalpindi in General Hospital.

Eligibility Criteria

Patients admitted by respective consultant of hospitals.

Admission Procedure

The admission procedure is stated below: 

  • Patients are admitted by the respective consultant of each unit according to his mentioned day on indoor basis
  • Patients who are not in need of admission are checked on outdoor basis and medicine is prescribed for a specific period which they can take while at home
  • The patient is admitted for 15 days for detoxification in addiction ward. In detoxification first 72 hours is withdrawal period in which the patient remains unstable. After withdrawal when patient becomes stable the patient is put to regular medication

  • Free psycho-social counseling
  • Family counseling for rehabilitation of admitted patients at home
  • Group counseling by MSO
  • Individual counseling by psychologist
  • Family visit arrangement
  • Recreation activities by MSO
  • Group discussion/ counseling/ focused group discussion of stable patients by delivering lectures on different topics related to drug addiction and relapse prevention
  • Lectures on personal hygiene and development
  • Preparation and dissemination of awareness material on drug addiction
  • Family contact either through letters or telephonically for the proper rehabilitation of patient
  • Provision of literature and indoor games’ articles to patients for keeping them busy
  • Celebration of national and international days
  • Arrangement of religious functions like Mehfil-e-Naat, Mehfil-e-Qirat etc.
  • Anti drug mass awareness campaign through arranging walks, camps and distribution of awareness material (brochures etc.)
  • Arrange awareness lectures for students of different institutions

Discharging Patients

Discharge procedure is as follows: 

  • Addicted patients are not admitted against their will
  • They cannot be forced to stay for a long time for treatment in the unit
  • If a patient asks for ‘discharge’ time and again, he is discharged, either by the In-charge Addiction Unit or respective unit Medical Officer on the behalf of Consultant Psychiatrist of the particular unit
  • Before discharging, if patient was admitted by the family, his family is approached to visit the hospital either through telephone or letter
  • If any family member promises to visit then the patient is advised to stay for 1-2 days so that his family can take him back in their supervision. If family couldn’t be approached in required period or did not respond then patient is discharged on self help basis
